OJ is hardly SpaceX, but the complex capabilities behind our modest-looking products can be quite a surprise to discover.<\/h4>\r\nFor many engineers \u2013 hardware or software \u2013 the chance to work with the \u201chottest\u201d technologies would be a dream come true. Who wouldn\u2019t be intrigued by next-generation drone defense, advanced robotics, space technology or some of the extraordinary engineering now going into renewable energy?

Yet these highly visible fields account for only a fraction of the engineering work being done. And technologies that never make the headlines can be far more complex \u2013 and more challenging \u2013 than anyone looking at the finished product might imagine.<\/p>\n

J\u00f6rn Petersen, an embedded software engineer at OJ Electronics, has a simple way of putting it. \u201cWell, we don\u2019t build rocket ships,\u201d he says. \u201cSo no, it\u2019s not rocket science in the traditional sense. But it is another kind <\/em>of rocket science<\/strong> \u2013 the kind you only discover when you start digging into the details.\u201d<\/p>\n

OJ develops<\/strong> fan drives<\/strong>, controllers<\/strong> for air-handling units, and thermostats for electric floor-heating and ice- and snow-melting systems<\/strong>. None of this is likely to appear on the front page of a technology magazine, but as J\u00f6rn points out, appearances can be deceptive.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\u201cA lot of what we make looks simple. Then you get into the details and discover just how much has to work together \u2013 hardware, software, control, communications, testing, the real-world environment. That\u2019s where the complexity starts to show.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Thermostat and So Much More<\/h2>\n

Consider the OJ product that most people around the world are likely to actually see: OJ thermostats for floor heating systems<\/strong>. There was a time when their basic job was relatively straightforward \u2013 measure the temperature and switch the heating on or off. As product manager Morten Zimmer Hansen puts it, thermostats have come a long way from simply going \u201cclick and clack.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today, temperature regulation is just one function these devices are responsible for. One of the company\u2019s latest models combines a large color touchscreen<\/strong> with heating and cooling control, humidity sensing, Wi-Fi connectivity, cloud communication and integration with smart-home ecosystems.<\/p>\n

Even cooling a room through the floor creates an engineering problem most homeowners will never know exists. Pump cold water through a floor on a warm, humid day and the surface can fall below the dew point, causing condensation. OJ\u2019s solution incorporates a humidity sensor and calculates the dew point continuously to keep the floor temperature above that critical level.<\/p>\n

\u201cThink about how much technology we\u2019re putting into something this small. There\u2019s a microprocessor in there \u2013 basically a computer \u2013 plus sensors, software, connectivity and all the intelligence needed to make it work properly.<\/p>\n

And around that small device sits an increasingly large technological ecosystem: Apps, cloud services, third-party APIs and connections to platforms like Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Making Tough Stuff Look Easy<\/h2>\n

The same principle applies to OJ\u2019s drives. Project manager Brian Skov describes them as products with a great deal of complexity hidden behind apparent simplicity<\/strong>. \u201cThere\u2019s a huge amount of engineering and know-how packed into them,\u201d he says. \u201cYou\u2019re trying to get high performance out of a relatively small drive without creating too much heat, too much electrical noise, or other problems.\u201d<\/p>\n

That apparent simplicity is part of the product as a whole. A customer shouldn\u2019t have to see all the engineering that went into making the drive. Ideally, the drive simply does what it\u2019s supposed to do, reliably and efficiently, inside a much larger system.<\/p>\n

Brian compares it to the old story about the bumblebee. \u201cIt shouldn\u2019t really be able to fly \u2013 but somehow it does.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Out of The Lab<\/h2>\n

Of course, getting something to work in the lab isn\u2019t the same as getting it to work everywhere. \u201cOur software doesn\u2019t live in an ideal world,\u201d J\u00f6rn says. \u201cOut in the field, you meet conditions that are very different from the ones you can create in a laboratory \u2013 and some of them are very harsh indeed.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

A product can meet its specifications perfectly in testing and still encounter a combination of conditions nobody anticipated once it reaches the customer. A drive can be installed thousands of kilometers away on an electrical supply with disturbances or imbalances. It might have to operate in heat, moisture or dirt. Or form part of a system built from equipment supplied by several different manufacturers.<\/p>\n

That can turn engineering into detective work. \u201cThe first challenge is often to reproduce the problem,\u201d J\u00f6rn says. \u201cOnce you can create the same conditions in the lab, you can start working out what\u2019s actually happening and how to fix it.\u201d<\/strong> Sometimes that means solving problems nobody knew existed when the product was designed.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Another Kind of Engineering Challenge<\/h2>\n

OJ isn\u2019t likely to start building rockets anytime soon. But spectacular-looking technology has never had a monopoly on difficult engineering. Sometimes the bigger challenge lies in fitting a surprising amount of intelligence, performance and reliability into something that sits elegantly on a wall, inside an air-handling unit, or somewhere deep in a building where nobody ever thinks about it.<\/p>\n
