Major Ventilation Drive
Software Release

  2 minutes read

New features make these dedicated ventilation drives more flexible, robust, and future-ready.

OJ Electronics DV drives are built for ventilation applications where reliability, efficiency, and long service life are essential. Via a new software release (AOC 4.11 and MOC 4.13), we have further strengthened the platform with five new features that address real-world commissioning, efficiency, and protection  challenges.

These features give you more flexibility, improved performance, and greater peace of mind – all from the same hardware. The update also includes a number of general improvements.

1. AutoTune for Faster Commissioning

Commissioning a new motor usually takes time, testing, and specialist knowledge. Thanks to a new AutoTune function, updated DV drives accelerate the process.

By connecting the DV PC Tool and entering basic motor nameplate data, you can now direct the drive to automatically identify the motor parameters required for high-performance field-oriented control of PMSM motors.

The result is faster setup, less dependency on expertise, and more consistent motor behavior. Sinc inductance is measured at higher current levels, inductance saturation is also reduced, improving control accuracy across the operating range.

2. Improved Efficiency with MTPA Control

Many modern motors generate torque not only from permanent magnets, but also from magnetic saliency. The new Maximum Torque Per Ampere (MTPA) control algorithm enables the DV drive to fully exploit this.

By continuously selecting the optimal current vector, the drive delivers the required torque using less current. This means lower losses, reduced heat generation, and improved efficiency – typically translating into lower energy consumption and extended component lifetime, especially in systems with long operating hours.

3. Support for Low-Speed Applications

While most ventilation systems operate at higher motor speeds, large fans in cooling towers and similar applications often run well below 350 rpm. This places different demands on the control algorithm.

Our updated ventilation drives now include enhancements that ensure smooth torque delivery and stable speed control at very low speeds. Control limits have been adjusted from percentage-based values to absolute minimums, and gain calculations have been optimized accordingly – allowing the drive to support a wider range of applications without sacrificing stability or performance.

4. Advanced Over-Voltage Protection

Modern VFDs increasingly use small film capacitors in the intermediate circuit, offering longer lifetime, improved reliability, and a more compact design. But smaller capacitors reduce the system’s ability to absorb energy during fault conditions.

The software update includes an advanced over-voltage protection method that addresses this directly. Instead of turning off all switching – which can cause dangerous voltage spikes – the drive controls the switching sequence so stored energy in the motor windings is converted into mechanical energy rather than charging the DC link.

The benefits? Higher reliability, improved safety, and lower lifecycle costs.

5. Faster and Smoother Field-weakening Response

Field weakening allows motors to operate above base speed without additional hardware, which is particularly useful during peak airflow demand. The new software improves the reaction time and smoothness of this function.

Fans can now respond faster to sudden changes in demand while maintaining stable operation, avoiding pressure surges, noise, and unnecessary mechanical stress. The result is a more responsive and energy-efficient system that protects both comfort and equipment longevity.

More Capability – Same Great Drives

Together, these five new features make our ventilation drives easier to commission, more efficient in operation, and more robust under fault conditions. All without having to replace or upgrade hardware.

The software release is available now. We’re excited to see you start taking advantage of these major new benefits.
