The value of external perspectives

  2 minutes read

Flemming Bundgaard joined OJ as R&D Director in 2020 and has since led a team responsible for the research and development of OJ’s entire product range. Central to OJ’s innovation process is close collaboration with external partners and universities, particularly for projects involving new technology.

OJ’s R&D department includes experts across disciplines like mechanics, software development, and design, creating a multi-skilled team capable of delivering an outstanding user experience. Together, they ensure that each product is optimized for performance before it moves into production.

From initial concept to final production, R&D works closely with OJ’s product managers to define each product’s capabilities. Flemming emphasizes the importance of continuously integrating new knowledge into OJ’s R&D processes.

“While our team brings extensive experience, there are times when an outside perspective can make a crucial difference. By seeking input from others, we open ourselves to new ideas and approaches, fostering a valuable learning environment.”

Incorporating new knowledge from universities

One key source of new insights is OJ’s collaboration with universities, where research often sparks ideas for integrating the latest technologies into products.

“Universities prioritize research, providing us with a unique advantage by keeping our employees informed about the latest developments in their field. This allows us to assess how emerging technologies can be applied to improve our products,” says Flemming, adding:

“We also bring in students through internships and student jobs, adding fresh knowledge and perspectives to our team.”

Partnering with external experts

For technology projects, OJ frequently engages with external consultants or partners. This approach allows for existing technology to be integrated more efficiently, ensuring that each project is grounded in tried-and-tested knowledge.

“Before we start a new project, we thoroughly assess the existing technology, often using Technology Readiness Level (TRL) assessments to determine if it’s ready for implementation. In many cases, we involve consultants or partners to guide us in this evaluation,” Flemming explains.

“These collaborations bring in valuable knowledge and create new business opportunities for OJ. They make our work faster and more efficient by eliminating the need to reinvent existing solutions. I firmly believe that innovation thrives on collaboration, where 2 + 2 can truly equal 8,” he concludes.
